Breaking down the process

There are four parties involved in affiliate marketing: the creator, the affiliate network, the publisher and the customer.
This may look confusing, but don’t panic. Let me break it down for you.

The Creator – Also known as the seller, brand or product inventor or retailer. This is the person or company who have created the brand or product you are going to promote. They can vary hugely in size; from large corporations like Adobe and John Lewis right down to the solo entrepreneur of a start-up company making hand-made products. It really doesn’t matter if they’re actively involved or how large the brand is, they just need to have a product to sell.

The Affiliate Network – The affiliate network can do all kinds of things; from managing your online presence, to generating leads for you. Although this is a very useful party, it is not considered by some to be completely necessary. Before you dismiss the idea of the affiliate network though, check out some of the extremely useful benefits of having the support of a network, further down in this article.

The Publisher – This is where you come in. You are the affiliate; the publisher of the top-quality content, that makes the sales, that pays the commission. Your job is to convince potential customers of the value of whatever you’re selling.
The Customer – Arguably the most important link in this chain is the customers themselves. Without them, no one gets paid. How you reach out is up to you, blog posts, online billboards or social media, but gathering a following of potential customers is absolutely essential.

How to get started – Step one: Choosing your niche

The first thing you need to decide is, what area do you want to focus on? What niche do you intend to target? What is your favourite product or brand? Choosing a niche is useful because you can tailor your content, whether it’s a website or blog (more on that later!), to target a specific audience.

The first part of the process of creating your affiliate business will involve a lot of research. The good thing about this step is that, once you’ve done the bulk of this research, you won’t need to do it again. After you’ve chosen and thoroughly researched your niche, all you’ll need to do is keep up to date with the latest news, products and services so that your content and what you’re selling stays relevant and interesting.

Whilst this may seem overwhelming, here are a few questions that you can ask yourself to help you get started.

1. What am I interested in?
What are you passionate about? It’s much easier to pitch a product you already feel enthusiastic towards. You need to be able to continually produce quality content pertaining to your chosen niche. Do you love make-up and skin care? Are you an avid collector of costume jewellery or board games? Choosing something you are already passionate about, usually means your knowledge base is already established, making the process easier from the start.

2. Can I make money with it?
Although it’s a great place to start, passion alone doesn’t make money. It can be more lucrative to explore other niches that are generating more profit. Don’t know anything about decorating, but it’s going to earn you money? Look it up! You might even find a new passion for hanging wallpaper in the process!

3. Can I sustain the content?

Whatever you choose to write about, you must make sure you could comfortably write potentially endless blog posts on the topic. Continually producing quality content in your chosen niche will ensure you always have eager followers waiting to read your next blog post and buy the next product, earning you money!

4. Is there a space for me?

Like anything, some markets are saturated. Some of the more profitable ones may already have many affiliate marketers, some of whom have a following of potential customers that may seem impossibly daunting to a beginner. But don’t panic – just keep searching for your niche!

5. Can I sell products in my chosen niche?

How much of your niche is just interesting and will draw people in to reading and understanding more about it, and how much does it have the potential for selling products? You need consumer interest to sell products in your niche. Are there people ready to buy?

6. Is there an affiliate program available?

The final and most important consideration in this important stage of research, is discovering whether it’s possible to become an affiliate marketer in your chosen niche. Is there a program for you to sell those products or brands? Do the companies who create the products within your niche have any interest in affiliate marketing? If not, just keep looking!

Step two: Choosing your affiliate network

Fitting in

Choosing the right affiliate network for both you and the customer is extremely important. You want to be able to reach the maximum amount of people within your chosen niche. Consequently, you need to make sure that similar merchants and sellers are using the program. Again, this takes a small amount of time and effort, but you should already be fairly knowledgeable on your chosen niche now. This will help when choosing the right network as you’ll have a better idea of which products and brands exist within your niche.

How do they pay?

After your initial research and the setting up of all the different online processes your affiliate marketing business needs to run, you can start watching the money come in, with minimal maintenance. But how does that work? Like anything, you get out what you put in.

So, the more content you create and the more people you reach with your marketing strategies, the more money you’ll make – easy!

• Cost Per Acquisition (CPA) – The most established method of payment is CPA. You get paid every time you drive a completed sale; the commission percentage rate varies, so check what rate the company offers to make sure it’s worth your while.

• Cost Per Click (CPC) – CPC is an easier way to make money as an affiliate as you only have to drive leads to the correct destination. They don’t necessarily have to make a purchase. However, there are only certain industries that use this method as it is not always the best financial decision for the merchant. If that’s your niche, though, then great!

• Fixed Cost – This model rewards the affiliate for the amount of time their leads spend engaging with or browsing the merchant’s web pages. This method is generally used for those publishers who have an already established, extended reach and give the merchant a good guarantee that they will reach a wide customer base. It’s a more guaranteed way to earn as you expand and nurture your following.

Again, you don’t need to be a computer expert to direct your customers to the relevant websites. Even if you don’t know how to create a banner as an advert, you can simply use an affiliate link to the product or service and therefore notify whoever the merchant is that the customer came via your link.

These affiliate links are tracked, so you know you’ll never miss the commission from a sale. It’s important to point out here, that you aren’t duping anyone AT ALL. Your commission is already built into the price of the product or service that you’re selling, so there is no detriment to the paying customer. They don’t pay more, they don’t miss out, and they get a great, honest and useful review before they buy. Most customers won’t be aware that they purchased through an affiliate link at all.

Are you proud to promote the product/brand?
You have to believe in the product or brand and know everything you can possibly know about it, to make a credible and convincing sales pitch.

Customers value honesty when buying any service or product, and if you can provide them with a sincere and trustworthy review of whatever it is you’re selling, they will be more likely to buy the product. building trust also means that they are likely to return to you for advice on future products, within your niche. This means more sales and the building up of a loyal customer base.

What kind of support does the network offer?

Be sure to check exactly what your affiliate network actually does. Is there someone available to call on the phone? Or is it email-only? Do you have to wait 72 hours for a reply?

You will need some sort of support, especially in the early days, so this is a really important bit of research to do. Speak to other affiliates who are members of the network, if you can, to find some honest reports and do your research online too.

An affiliate network can do a huge bulk of the work for you, after your initial set-up process. Can you really ask for more than that? From sourcing clients, to providing the software that generates leads and automated posts and emails. Using a good management company could even mean that your website is managed for you and your customer data is used to its full potential to generate even more future sales.

• Review products – A great and easy way to get started is to write some effective and useful product or service reviews. Things like My Top Five Favourite Face Creams, or, Which TV should I choose next… well, you get the idea. Again, try to keep your reviews as honest as possible and try and have actually used the products or service that you’re reviewing, or at least have an excellent, in-depth knowledge of them.

• Blog posts – Blog posts are useful for a more in-depth exploration of an element of your niche. The trick here is to research key-words that appear frequently in your niche and write them into your post in a natural and valuable way, not just using them to optimise your search engine potential (SEO), but really provide your audience with some helpful information on a topic. Researching competitors and scouring social media can be useful when trying to come up with the topic and titles for your blog. You can then link readers to useful products or services as you explore your topic.

• Evergreen content – If your niche has useful information that won’t change or become dated, and will remain useful, it is the perfect opportunity to provide your potential customers with what is known as evergreen content.
This is also a very important opportunity to use relevant key-words. If you organise your evergreen content under easy-to-find headings that are relevant all year round, it makes it easy and convenient for the reader to find what they’re looking for. When it comes to growing your online presence, particularly on Instagram, is it better to let it happen organically? Or pay for it to happen artificially?

Just to be clear:

organic growth is earned and determined by algorithms that boost your content based on its value and merits.

paid advertising is the opposite. It’s bought rather than earned, paying for ad-content to reach potential customers.

Ultimately, there are deciding factors, such as budget, cost, how much time you have and what niche your business is in. But next, we want to try and show you both avenues and the pros and cons of them, to help you decide what’s a perfect fit for your Instagram business.


            Pros and cons


The best thing you can do for your business is to spend many hours organising your marketing campaigns, creating the perfect content, posting at the ideal time and growing your following with your infectious wit, enthralling content and fantastic social media skill. Having a large organic following and a reliable customer base is the holy grail for most businesses and brands. However, progress can be snail-like and you may not have the time to wait for results.

Campaigns can take weeks to set up and implement and then completely fail, leaving you to start all over again, with not even ten new followers to your brand. It can be disheartening.

So, is paid advertising for you then?

Well, when it comes to time, paid advertising is certainly on your side. A small amount of set up and as wide a reach as you pay for. But what sort of costs gain you what sort of reach?


There is no set cost for advertising on Instagram. Essentially, you bid for an advertising slot and Instagram places the ad that bids the highest and not just in cost, in the value of content too. This is a simplified version of events, of course.

You have to choose your budget, your type of cost (ie. Cost Per Click or Cost Per Mile) and who to target with your ad.

AdEspresso found that the average cost for using CPC (Cost Per Click) advertising is around $0.70 to $1.00 (or 54p to 78p). But this can vary for a whole load of reasons. For example, 18-24-year-olds will come with a higher CPC, so you will have to look at setting an average daily budget.

Using CPM is slightly different; you pay for every thousand impressions that your ad receives. But, in a highly targeted marketing campaign, you could be looking at paying over $5 (or £3.88) each CPM.

However, it is just as poignant to suggest that, by spending the time in gaining your followers and sales organically, you are wasting money. All the time spent on your campaign could be time spent elsewhere.

Platform and engagement

The costs of paid advertising on Instagram outweigh the cost of advertising on its sister platform, Facebook, sometimes by double. It is worth noting though, that a study done by Forrester found that Instagram posts get ten times more engagement than Facebook posts.

However, this could work in the favour of paid ads or organically created posts. It all comes back again to how much time you have to create your beautiful content and implement the strategies necessary to reach a large audience.


The joy of organic growth is that it will likely build a legitimate, long-term set of followers who regularly engage with your content and keep coming back to your brand and making you money. You’re able to build relationships and engage in return. You aren’t starting from scratch every month, just building on what you’ve already done.

Unfortunately, as usefully instantaneous as paid advertising is, once you stop bidding for ads, your traffic will drop dramatically. Each new campaign requires a new ad and possibly a different angle to attract a new set of customers. An ad with the right, valuable content can be useful for pulling a quick sale, but it doesn’t build trust and communication. While some customers may return and you may gain a small following, it isn’t as sustainable as organically growing your brand.

It’s a good idea to invest in a smart-phone with a high spec camera, or even a decent camera for this purpose alone.

A poor tradesman never blames his tools, it’s true, but if your tools are high quality to start with, it will certainly make your working life easier!

Colour & Image

 Studies show that not only does it matter, there are a few ‘do’s’ and ‘don’ts’. DO keep your images to a vague sort of theme, giving your account a better aesthetic appeal. DON’T clutter all your pictures with lots of colour; apparently pictures with a uniformed hue gain better engagement. Finally, a fun fact – images that are predominantly blue, get 24% more likes than those that are mainly red! (source)

Equally, bold lines and images, with not too much cluttering them are easiest for the human brain to digest. Don’t unnecessarily over-task your followers. Keep it simple.

Create your own voice

You should aim to create a voice for your brand. Consistency, themes, a general feeling of ‘sameness’ will ensure that each of your posts is automatically associated with your brand. Easier recognition means more recognition, as your customers don’t have to work as hard to know that it’s you!


You may not be a photoshop genius. But it’s never too late to learn. You can have a play with the editing suite and filters on Instagram, but you can always find one with more functions. With lots of online design tools, like Spark Post from Adobe, you can edit your photos to almost-professional standards.


You may think that you can let your pictures and videos speak for themselves, and to some extent, you can. But people still like to read your captions to connect to the human voice behind the brand. They need to be fresh, creative and compelling. This is your chance to convert that person to your brand!

Provide context, be succinct, incite a response and reference popular culture (a huge portion of the Instagram demographic is under 35).

Take your time to minimise errors, a rushed post with a rushed caption will be obvious. Be conversational and open, formality never comes across well.

Like all Insta content, provide something useful about your brand, or an interesting or trending topic, if you can. Not all information can be conveyed, simply through an image.

Keep a close eye on your responses and measure what type of captions work best for your audience. Again, it’s all about knowing what your audience wants to read, as well as see!

Using the hashtag is a bit of a balancing act. Use too many, you come across as spammy. Use too few, you might not be extending your reach as far as you could be doing. Your hashtags should be relevant and useful.

Studies show that brands that use hashtags and location tags get more engagement. And you can’t argue with the facts.

Brands that use at least one hashtag get an average of 12.6% more engagement than their counterparts.

The same study suggests that, while it’s a good idea to utilise them, it’s also a good idea to find a happy medium – 91% of top brands only post seven or fewer hashtags.

Location Tags

This one is self-explanatory, particularly if your brand or product relies on a place of business in a certain location. If a user searches for your area, your images will show up.

Tagging others

Equally, tagging others in your niche can serve a couple of purposes. First and foremost, you’re reaching a whole lot of followers (theirs) that you may not have done, without. But even better, you’re expanding your community. Communication with others in your niche is important to expand your brand.


            Video content

Video is the latest favourite on Instagram. Take advantage of it. Business Insider reveals that ‘Instagram video attracts more engagement that Instagram competitors’. Meaning it really is time to jump on that bandwagon.

Even a well-placed Gif can grab the attention of potential customers.

Again, be valuable. Post useful videos. 60-second insider videos, describing your brand can really humanise it for potential customers. Equally, how-to videos can often go down well, especially if one of your products can be showcased in this way.

You might think there’s not as much value in a post that only lasts 24 hours. There is. Let us explain how.

Stories can be incredibly useful for sharing limited time offers, encouraging people to engage quickly for a good deal can be a good way of getting the fast likes you need to increase your reach!

A cheeky tip? Randomly select which days you put out your offers. This will keep people coming back often to check if one’s up!

But don’t just use Stories for offering deals. You should also use it for insider peeks at your business and brand and short how-to videos for your products. This all contributes to humanising your brand and connecting with your audience.

Invite an influencer into your account. If you’ve built a good relationship with an influencer (remember all the organic growth stuff?), you could petition them to take over your Stories for a day! That way, you’re reaching their large and invaluable following.

Timeline Videos

Videos can be up to 60 seconds long and are the perfect way to grab your followers attention with quality footage. It can be anything pertaining to your brand!

Create short, engaging advertisements in the form of videos.

Use text overlay and subtitles. This is great for context and means you can get creative with your videos. But try to keep it to a minimum. Your videos should supply the main narrative.

Instagram changes with the times. When they recently discovered that ‘younger audiences are spending more time with amateur content creators and less time with professionals’, they introduced IGTV.

It’s mobile-friendly video, more easily discovered and, most importantly, features longer videos. Anyone be a creator, and you’d be foolish not to take advantage of the opportunity to extend your video-skills, whether that’s how-to tutorials, behind-the-scenes vids or interviews with someone important to your brand, it’s there, so use it!


            A final word on Content…

Beware of pushing your products too much. Try not to be ‘sales-y’. It can be a huge turn-off. Vary your content, keep it interesting and engaging. Your image or video should tell a story, your caption should provide the context and your hashtags should connect you with others in your niche.

Most of all, know your audience. What do they want to see? What do they like to read or watch? Doing your research here is essential.

You can make the most incredible content, but if you’ve filmed your latest mountain bike ride with your high-quality action camera, edited it to perfection and you’re wanting to show it to the beauty community, who you sell eye-color palettes to, be aware that you’re likely to get less engagement on that post!

5. How to manage your profile – business or personal?

Many people start out using a personal account when seeking Instagram engagement for their business. Which is fine. But if you’re thinking of taking Instagram business seriously, you may be looking into changing yours to a business account, like over 15 million businesses before you.
